Types of Shower Drains There are three basic kinds of shower floor drain. The first type is a "point drain." These are the most common and are usually in the middle of the floor. You can find round and square top ones (the latter looks nice with square floor tiles), and most are small and inexpensive. The second are linear floor drain, which usually span the entire width of one shower wall; the whole floor has to slope in one direction towards it. Finally, you can use three-point drains for tile insert floor drain on shower pans or pan liners on top of wooden subfloors. These drains have a bottom piece that goes into the drainpipe, a middle piece for over the pan or liner and a third part on top to match the tile.
